Hope is a Gentle Lie

The Beautiful Lie of Hope

"They say hope keeps us alive. But maybe it's only the story we tell ourselves to survive."

Hope

They say hope keeps us alive. But maybe it's just a beautifully wrapped lie we tell ourselves to make the unbearable feel bearable.

We hope things will improve. That pain has a point. That suffering refines us. That one day, if we keep going, it'll all make sense.

But more often than not, hope is what leads us deeper into the fire, whispering:

"Just a little longer."

What If This Is It?

What if there is no "better"?

What if this—the boredom, the dread, the repetition—is all there is?

What if life isn't a journey toward something, but merely a holding pattern until we collapse?

These questions have no obligation to comfort us.

They simply exist.

The Waiting Room

Still, we decorate the waiting room.

We smile.

We make plans.

We fall in love.

We chase success.

We pretend we're not afraid.

Hope isn't a cure.

It's an anesthetic.

It dulls the blade.

It never removes it.

Unhope

The truth isn't comforting.

But it is clean.

Unhope doesn't necessarily destroy you.

It frees you.

It asks nothing.

It promises nothing.

It allows you to stop begging the universe for meaning and begin seeing things exactly as they are.

The universe owes you an explanation.

It never did.

Everything and Nothing

Which is nothing.

And somehow...

That becomes everything.
